So the undergrad theatre dept. is putting on a play this entire week May 13-17.
It's called "Surf Orpheus" and seems like a really tight show. I know it's Sungod week, but I think it'd be fun to go watch it together!
I'm thinking of going on Saturday (May 17th) at 2pm. That's probably enough time to nurse that hangover right? Let me know if you're interested in seeing the show...I've included the site where you can read up a bit more about it.. but here's a description I got from it...
"Surf Orpheus blends music, movement, and myth into a contemporary musical theatre experience. Researched and developed over two years at the University of California, San Diego Theatre and Dance department, the creators have re-envisioned this ancient love story through the lens of Southern California’s surf culture, the sounds of contemporary music, and images of the beach, the sea, and our dreams."
Tickets are $10. If you want to go comment to this post or facebook me, Jan Koh, or email me at jakoh@ucsd.edu

Ready for a new kick ass year?!!
Hey guys!
This is Jan Koh, your new '08-'09 RCC Commuter rep!
First of all, thanks for the shout out, Sam haha.
As for some random fun facts about me... I'm going to be a junior next year, I'm a critical gender studies/ political science major, yup - I'm one of the five non-science major Revelle kids I:)
BUT...I have been taking some science major classes for the hell of it...so I definitely earned some nerd points for that! I'm a pretty random, weird, friendly person so if you want to facebook me or have a heated debate with me over the differences between popcorn and kettle corn then I'm always up for it!
Well...I hope you guys are all ready for the crazy, free and/or subsidized, shocking fun we're going to have this year (oh yeah -SHOCKING) ... I'm expecting to continue some old favorites -commuter maps, casual get-togethers/ socials and also some new things involving plays in the Theatre District, movie nights, house parties, and events that may include costumes, obscene amounts of food and Velcro... but I guess you guys will just have to show up to see what I mean - wouldn't want to ruin the surprise now would I? I;)
I can't wait to meet all of you guys - feel free to post suggestions for activities or just random things that you like to do!
Remember that you can always message me your ideas/comments on facebook too!

stumbled upon this great blog, dedicated to healthy, eco-conscious lifestyle thats mainly focused around the L.A. area. i mean, its only about 100 miles away and lets face it... being healthy AND eco-conscious should be an international focus, not just in L.A. and i'm sure this will be a great starting point for many to journey off... beirut
when i first listened to beirut, i had one of those moments in life that epitomizes all the feelings that you are feeling at the time (mainly who you are and where you're going in life) and it just kind of all made sense.

this guy is a 21 year old brilliant artist who makes me jealous to think of all the untapped potential that we as youth have in terms of creativity.
heres an excerpt from last.fm about him:
While it may sound like an entire Balkan orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads and upbeat marches, Beirut’s first album, Gulag Orkestar, is largely the work of one 21-year-old Albuquerque native, Zach Condon, and was almost completely recorded at home. Horns, violins, cello, ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiels, drums, tambourines, congas, organs, pianos, clarinets and accordions (no guitars on this album!) all build and break the melodies under Condon’s deep-voiced crooner vocals, swaying to the Eastern European beats that sound like they’re being brought to you by a 12-member ensemble.
Though young, Condon already has a few albums under his belt. He recorded under the name The Real People when he was fifteen, which was an electronic record admittedly fashioned after his love of The Magnetic Fields. At sixteen, he recorded an entire doo-wop album that was inspired by Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Condon was a straight-A student until he dropped out at the age of 16 to travel Europe in a drunken haze, cavorting and partying with the locals

wherever he ended up. It was during one of these evenings that he was first exposed to Balkan gypsy music (notably including the Boban Markovic Orkestar), blasting from the upstairs apartment. Condon went upstairs to see what exactly he was hearing, and ended up staying up all night with the Serbian artists, going through albums country by country, note for note. This new album is the direct result of what he learned that night.

the reason why i'm sharing this guy with you right now, is not only because he's playing a show at the wiltern on May, 30!!!!!!!!! but because hopefully he will introduce you to new genres of music that has the potential to change your whole perspective on what modern music is, and where it's going.
for me, his music represents a nostalgia that has been lost through the ever present producing of pop-one-hit-wonder-singles, and reminds me of what music is all about: the music. check him out on last.fm or something. i'm not promising it will be epic, but it probably will be.

Born in 1972 in Osaka, Japan, Shiota graduated from Kyoto Seika University before spending time in Australia and then settling in Germany where she studied under Marina Abramovic at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste and Rebecca Horn at the Universität der Künste, Berlin. Beginning her career as a painter, Shiota works today mainly in installation and performance art. Using a finely honed artistic vocabulary, Shiota integrates a diverse range of influences ranging from the sophistication of Japanese textile processing, the expressiveness of Far Eastern calligraphy, Eva Hesse’s woven nets of string, Sol LeWitt’s structures and wall drawings, Christo’s wrappings, Janine Antoni’s performances and Ana Mendieta’s body-related works into a wholly personal and visually intense experience. Through ritualistic and obsessive contemplation, Shiota’s work attempts to arrest time and to meld reality with the subconscious.
For this exhibition, Chiharu binds the gallery in a tangle of burnt chairs and black wool thread creating a space of palpable tension and suspension, both physical and psychological. Shiota literally spins her worldview into an amalgamation of transcultural experiences where her feeling of troubled homelessness intertwines with a strong sense of integration with the situation around her. Shiota has a deep awareness that where she belongs is sometimes clearer in memory and by binding the gallery into a tangled snare of recollection she weaves a net of safety, security, love and h that is deeply personal. This sense of security is fleeting however and one discovers that the installation is embedded with the nightmarish sense that it is at once fleeting, impenetrable, imprisoning and misleading.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeVsAOWt1Y7t8FszSsU2HJSET_yU7ZzSUc8zSN8UfXDbPGXY2tTBYZiuBRhdbvDAXKSbxQ1f0Yiw9STHGn9Oo0Z7RzLnLzsMidQT42VL912VbFTr4chNVBNZrmHFKwe8_3xE6H6nkDLS3w/s400/chiharu1.jpg)
It seems to me that there is no way back, no matter where I go…The threads are interwoven into each other. Get entangled. Torn apart. And disentangle themselves. [1]
Referencing an incident in her childhood where a neighbor’s home burned to the ground, Shiota uses the burnt chairs to explore how an object becomes stronger and more beautiful through its loss of function; through its apparent death. Within this violent impact of destruction lies a poetic and tranquil awareness of how the past informs the present, where the invisible does not necessarily mean absence, and where we are led into the inevitable future. It is here that the relationship between one’s self and the outside world, loneliness and frustration, death and life reside and where we, alongside Shiota, all remain waiting."

Well, the new amsterdams was SO that band for me. This is the get up kids' lead singer's side band and is pretty awesome. although i haven't listened to them in a while i can totally tell you that their lyrics and melodies are so nostalgic and reminiscent of by gone days when electro-pop and techno WASN'T all the rage, and acoustics and lyrics were actually relevant. The band has never come to UCSD before, so heres your chance to see them!

Description
Yes, it is a Party to Benefit the future commuters of UC San Diego.
If you disagree with paying more money for parking permits, then come.
If you like alternative transportation, then come.
Transportation and Parking Services just published a report that calls for the need to accommodate the growing number of students coming to UCSD in the next 5 years. Their solutions to this problem are as follows:
1. Restrictions on parking
2. Build another parking structure- Just proposed!!!
3. Expand alternative transportation options
Each of these solutions will have an impact on students next year and in the future.
1. Restrictions might be targeted towards residents... so that means allowing only a few residents to park on campus.
2. Creating a parking structure, which the Transportation Policy Committee will be voting on on Feb. 6th, means a 4-10% annual increase on permit fees until 2013 starting next year. So you may be looking at paying $1,089 a year just to park! NON-GRADUATING STUDENTS WILL BE AFFECTED BY THIS!
3. Regional bus pass and trolley coming into UCSD are likely future expansions of alternative transportation. Which may come with a student fee, but may not be as big of a student fee as having another parking structure.
Therefore, we are hosting this forum/social in order to inform everyone that building a new parking structure is NOT the way to solve this problem.
This event is open to all... you do not need to be a commuter or over 21 to attend. Just interested in the topics of your money and the future of UCSD... oh yea and FREE FOOD :)

One of the most internationally acclaimed artists to emerge from Asia in the postwar era, Takashi Murakami effortlessly navigates between the worlds of fine art and popular culture and is best known for his cartoon-like, “superflat” style. This major traveling retrospective includes key selections spanning the artist’s career, from the early 1990s to the present. More than 90 works in various media—painting, sculpture, installation, and film—are installed in five sections, occupying over 35,000 square feet of exhibition space. The first portion features many of Murakami’s acclaimed large-scale otaku-inspired sculptural figures from the late 1990s. The second section comprises a grid-like shelving display of Murakami’s merchandise. A fully operational Louis Vuitton boutique, showcasing the artist’s collaboration with the designer brand, is on the mezzanine level. The largest portion of the exhibition traces Murakami’s artistic development, including early works that engage branding and the evolution of his signature character, DOB. Of particular importance, is the debut of Oval Buddha, an enormous self-portrait sculpture in the guise of a Buddha, and the premiere of part one of the artist’s first major animated film, kaikai & kiki. New installments of kaikai & kiki will continue at the exhibition tour venues.

And with images like these that are reminiscent of a youthful age that has past, and inspiringly hopeful for new genres of contemporary art. Murakami's exhibit at the M.O.C.A. in L.A. is worth a visit!
The exhibit only lasts until February 11, and includes a full section devoted to the Louis Vuitton handbags that he created for the brand. Contemporary, luxe, and charmingly beautiful. What more could you ask for?

Pub After Dark: Dave Elkins, of Mae
For all those teenage kids that listened to Mae in High School/Jr. High, (secret: on occasion I still do too) Dave Elkins, of Mae is playing at Pub After Dark!Heres all the info:
Mae, or Mulitsensory Aesthetic Experience, hales all the way from Virginia. The bands started originally as the combined efforts of Dave and Jacob Marshall, the drummer. Over time, the two picked up guitarist Zach Gehring, Bassist Mark Padgett, and Keyboardist Rob Sweitzer.
Drawing influences from classic rock bands such as U2, Mae released their first album, Destination: Beautiful in February of 2003. Immediately upon the drop of this album, the group began to receive many national touring opportunities from alternative rock royalty such as The Foo Fighters, Weezer, and most recently, The Fray and OKGo. The Spring 2005 of the band’s second full length lp entitled The Everglow truly lived up to the bands name when they included an insert that had art meant to accompany each song. Today, the combined album sales from the first two albums reach nearly half a million units sold.
The bands most recent release, Singularity, dares its listeners to crank up the volume to more dynamic original tracks that boasts the band’s new found maturity while not loosing sight of their synthesizer inspired roots. Coming in on the Billboard Top 200’s Top 50 cds in the country, Singularity will truly capture the ears and hearts of all who listen.
Don’t forget to come check out Dave Elkins of Mae on Tuesday, January 15th at 7:30 PM in The Stage At Porters Pub! As always, this show is free to UCSD students, but arrive early because space is extremely limited.
Also, Come early to check out We Shot The Moon (members of Waking Ashland and Sherwood) and The Envy Corps who sound a lot like modest mouse.
As always, this show is free and open to UCSD students and thier guests. Arrive early, space is extremely limited!

So don't pretend like you have something better to do on a Tuesday night, because this shit is free and pretty cool. So go! go! go!
A new year, and a new start
Now that first week shenanigans are over and done with... it's time to face reality. It's WINTER QUARTER, and I already have about 200 pages to read for my classes. And being the procrastinator I am, I'm here posting the first post on this new blog!
This blog, is a means for Revelle College, and UCSD commuters in general, to access information about on and off campus events that pertain to you. Being art/music/fashion obsessed, this blog isn't going to pertain to places and things only affiliated with UCSD, but things/events that are, in my terms, extremely "LEGIT". And for those of you not familiar with this term, urbandictionary.com defines it as:
so there you go. Come to this site for the best of what Revelle College Council/Organizations have planned for you, ANNNND what the greater Southern California area has to offfer. Concerts, raves, art shows, sample sales, restaurants... basically, EVERYTHING COOL. You wont be disappointed, I guarantee it.
And for you transfers out there, WELCOME! And note that Connie Avina, our resident Transfer Representative will be updating you guys with events that apply specifically to you. Heres to good times, good parties, and good friends.
Cheers and thanks for reading,
